Irish actress Victoria Smurfit has revealed that she has split from her boyfriend, filmmaker Alistair Ramsden, but says that they remain close friends.

The 43-year-old Dublin-born, Los Angeles-based star opened up about the end of their relationship to The Sunday Independent, saying:  "I am not with Al any more. We haven’t been together since the start to the summer. It came to a natural conclusion.

"But he doens’t live far away, so he’s still a great pal. There was no drama whatsoever.

"I could write a book on how to stay friends with your exes. I am brilliant at it".

She added that her secret to remaining friends with an ex is to "remember why you were friends to begin with".

Smurfit also spoke about an experience she had as a younger actress trying to break into the film industry. She said that when she was in her 20s, she lost out on a role in a big Hollywood movie after refusing to go back to the producer's hotel room.

She said: "There was one huge film I auditioned for in my 20s and I was asked to come along for a second audition. That went fantastic and the producer told me that the production team are all going out for dinner and that I should come along.

"So we were all out drinking and I kept pouring my glass into a potted plant because I knew I had to be on my game and as the night wore on everyone decided to leave to go dancing. The producer said 'you are coming with me to my hotel room'."

She refused to go with him and "legged it back to my hotel". Smurfit says she was flown to Los Angeles for the final audition where she saw the producer and he told her 'I am done with you'.

She said she knew in that moment that she wasn't going to get the job. Smurfit added that she was in a lucky position as she knew she "wasn't going to go hungry", saying: "I was very lucky, I come from a successful family and acting didn't depend on the bread and butter for my mouth."

The Irish star will be flying to Dublin in February for this year's Irish Film and Television Awards where she has been nominated for best supporting actress in film for The Lears. Her short film The Secret Market, for which she is the lead actress and producer, has also been shortlisted for best live action short.

The actress is mother to three children with her ex-husband Doug Baxter, who she filed for divorce from in February 2015 after 15 years of marriage.
