Saoirse Ronan has been announced as the winner of the Best Actress award by the Vancouver Film Critics Circle for her performance in Lady Bird.

The honour comes shortly after Ronan earned a Golden Globe nomination for the part, with the star also shortlisted for the Critic's Choice and Independent Spirit Awards.

Lady Bird, which was written and directed by Greta Gerwig, has also been named Best Picture by the Critics Circle, with Laurie Metcalfe picking up the Best Supporting Actress award for her role as Ronan's on screen mother.

Daniel Day-Lewis

Daniel Day-Lewis' turn in Phantom Thread, for which he also received a Golden Globes nod, has seen him named Best Actor.

The Vancouver Film Critics Circle Awards will take place on January 6, with all of the Canadian film winners unveiled at the ceremony.

Loosely based on Gerwig's own experiences growing up in Northern California, Lady Bird sees Ronan's character, Christine 'Lady Bird' McPherson, desperate to leave home and her overbearing mother for the wider worldview of college life.

Lady Bird hits Irish cinemas on February 16.
