A host of celebrities have taken to Twitter to celebrate Australia's vote in favour of same sex marriage including singer Kylie Minogue, American Horror Story actor Matt Bomer and pop group Take That.

In a non-binding survey, 61.6% of Australian voters were in favour of the marriage equality proposal, leading to joy and celebrations around the country.

Minogue tweeted "Love is love, always was love, always will be love", while Bomer said "I'm so happy for you - one more step towards equality for all!"

Meanwhile, Take That, who are currently in in Australia, tweeted a video message. Gary Barlow said: "We are so glad the vote went the right way and we cannot wait to get on stage in Melbourne tonight and celebrate with you all", before his band member Howard Donald turned to him and asked "Will you marry me?"

Australian Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull said he wants Parliament to pass the legalisation to allow same-sex marriage before Christmas.

Speaking after the result, he said: "Australians have voted yes for fairness, they have voted yes for commitment, they have voted yes for love."

Ireland's Taoiseach Leo Varadkar also congratulated the country for the yes vote, which follows Ireland's May 2015 referendum in which 62% of voters voted for marriage equality.

Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said he was "thrilled" to hear about the vote, while London Mayor Sadiq Khan said "everyone should be free to love whoever they want to love".
