The final season of Game of Thrones sees Miguel Sapochnik return to the director's chair, having previously helmed four episodes of the series; three of which are the highest-rated episodes overall.

Sapochnik has directed four episodes of the hit fantasy drama so far, three of which (Battle of the Bastards, The Winds of Winter and Hardhome) are tied with The Rains of Castamere aka The Red Wedding, as the highest-rated episodes of the series. Each episode has a 9.9/10 rating on IMDb.

He also directed season five's The Gift, which has a rating of 9.1/10.

The Battle of the Bastards

Sapochnik did not direct any of season seven, having last brought the show's sixth run to a close with the double-header Battle of the Bastards and The Winds of Winter.

Fans were hopeful that Sapochnik would return to bring the series to a close when it concludes after the six-episode run for season eight, and it looks as though he is back to work, though it is not yet known where his episode(s) will place in the timeline of the season.

Game of Thrones: Season 7's Biggest Moment

While no official list of directors has been released yet for season eight, director of photography Fabian Wagner posted a picture with Sapochnik to Instagram saying "the team is back together" to start "prep of the final season."

The picture Wagner posted is an old image of him on set with Sapochnik, VFX supervisor Joe Bauer, VFX producer Steve Kullback and assistant Caroline Anderson, and the caption reads, "Back on Game of Thrones for prep of the final season and the team is back together. Good times even though winter is already here."

Little news from the production of season eight has been released so far, but Daenerys Targaryen star Emilia Clarke has embraced her character's trademark platinum blonde locks.

Clarke shared a photo to Instagram after getting a haircut and dye at the hands of the two people behind the wigs she has been using to this point on the show; Candice Banks and Kev Alexander.

Many are speculating as to what the hair cut could mean for her character as she has never before undergone such a transformation before filming.

Could Daenerys cut her hair in order to join The Great War? Will she lose a battle and have her hair cut - the Dothraki grow their hair long but it is cut off if they are defeated? Or is Clarke simply embracing her character's colour as the show comes to an end?

A release date for Game of Thrones season eight has not yet been released.
