Ed Sheeran and the curse of the celebrity cameo

Ed Sheeran made a widely panned cameo in Game of Thrones

Ed Sheeran's Game of Thrones cameo went down like a lead balloon among viewers and has now been added to the annals of misguided celebrity cameos - see who else made the cut here.

The songster made a prominent cameo in the feverishly anticipated first episode of the penultimate season of the fantasy show as one of a group of soldiers who Arya Stark happens upon in the woods.

She is drawn in by him singing an incredibly boring song to his band of men, and as she comes closer the camera closes in on Sheeran's face as he utters his big line: "It's a new one."

Rather distractingly, the chart-topper remains in the background of the entire three-and-a-half minute scene, variously nodding, passing food and drink around and mumbling.

The wholly unsubtle cameo didn't do Game of Thrones or Ed Sheeran any favours, considering that he's deleted his Twitter account following a backlash online.

We've rounded up some equally badly-received celebrity cameos below.

David Beckham in King Arthur: Legend of the Sword

Guy Richie's reimagining of the King Arthur legend was widely panned upon its release and one of the most criticised parts of the movie was former footballer David Beckham's cameo. The frenetic, frequently confusing epic takes a swift nosedive when Beckham appears on screen. He has been de-prettified with a hook nose and gruesome scarring and turns around to tell Arthur to pull the sword from the stone. It should have been a big moment for the film, but Beckham's presence and laboured delivery distract from the proceedings entirely.

Donald Trump in Home Alone 2

Long before he had designs on The White House, US President Donald Trump appeared in 1992 caper Home Alone 2 as he gives directions to Kevin McCallister (Macaulay Culkin) at the Plaza Hotel, which he owned at the time. The most positive thing you can say about the appearance is that it's mercifully brief, telling a lost Kevin that the lobby is "down the hall and to the left" before heading on his merry way.

Madonna in Die Another Day

Cringe. Madonna's turn as fencing instructor Verity in Die Another Day was fairly awful. In her big scene, the singing superstar whips around to face Pierce Brosnan's Bond before they engage in a mortifying chit-chat laden with innuendo. Her delivery was flat, bordering on awkward, and she looks decidedly uninterested in the whole thing. At least it's in keeping with most of the film, which is pretty bad all 'round.

Kanye West in The Love Guru

We think Kanye should be sticking to the day job. The music star turned up in the Mike Myers stinker of a movie The Love Guru, where he yells from the sidelines of a game "I love hockey, I love hockeeeeeeey" while clasping his hands to his face with emotion.

Katy Perry in Zoolander 2

Another example of a music star missing the mark in a cameo role is Katy Perry's bizarre and wholly unfunny turn in Zoolander 2. The film has its fair share of bad cameos but this takes the biscuit. Why, just why?

Cheryl - What To Expect When You're Expecting

X Factor star Cheryl probably didn't have to dig too deep for her role as a judge on a fictional talent show in What To Expect When You're Expecting, but the resulting performance is extremely unconvincing. Sorry, Cheryl, we just weren't feeling it.
