The final season of The Leftovers begins on Sky Atlantic while Nathan Carter gets a busman's on Nathan Goes to Nashville on RTÉ One

Pick of the day

The Leftovers, 10.00pm, Sky Atlantic

The third and final season of this remarkable, achingly sombre drama about loss begins with something I can't stand: a double-bill that carries on after midnight. Some of us need to sleep!

Anyway; minor gripe. This show is quite flawless and it's taken far too long - almost two years - for season three to appear. Every moment of the eight episodes shall be savoured.

Seven years have passed since the Sudden Departure, when 2% of the Earth's population inexplicably vanished, leaving loved ones devastated and having to cope with a situation far beyond their comprehension.

Now, rumours are circulating that an even greater catastrophe could be on the horizon, which further freaks out an already mentally-brittle populace.

The cast is fantastic and includes Justin Theroux, Carrie Coon, Amy Brenneman and Christopher Eccleston. If you haven't seen The Leftovers, you really are missing out on one of the truly great TV shows of our time.

Movie Choice of the day

Taken, 10.20pm, Sky Cinema Hits

This 2008 film completely changed Liam Neeson's career, and catapulted him into the stellar world of A-lister status by transforming him into an action movie star.

The big man plays a former CIA operative Bryan Mills who sets about tracking down his teenage daughter Kim and her best friend Amanda after the two girls are kidnapped by Albanian human traffickers for sexual slavery while travelling in France.

Taken's not to be, eh, taken too seriously. But once you put some daft plotlines to the back of your mind and tag along for the ride, you'll have a ball with this Bond-like thriller.

Soap Choice of the day

Fair City, 8.00pm, RTÉ One

It begins to look as though Dermot's days of freedom are pretty much as good as over down Carrigstown way when he attempts to go on the run but gets discovered by Paul.

Never one to ignore an opportunity, Paul plays hardball with the intention of turning the situation to his advantage.

But there's nothing certain here as there are more twists ahead in this sordid adventure.

Spin, All4

Subtitled foreign drama has been a bit of a thing for a few years now, though its stock seems to fading, perhaps due to overload. There's just tons of it around. It's the visual equivalent of prosecco or cava.

Easily one of the best shows has been this slick political drama from France, which is basically about a perma-unshaven spin doctor keeping cool when all around him are edging over a metaphorical or political cliff.

In the opening season (one of two available) the French president falls victim to a suicide bomber, his ex-communications adviser, Simon Kapita, finds political manoeuvrings soon begin as he is courted by his sworn enemy - the prime minister.

Today's Guilty Pleasure

Nathan Goes to Nashville, 9.35pm, RTÉ One

More musical Marmite, this time with Scouser and honorary Irishman Nathan Carter heading on the trip of a lifetime to Nashville in Tennessee, the home of country music.

Country has dominated Nathan's life and he enthusiastically heads for such legendary landmarks as the Bluebird Café - where he gets to perform - and the Ryman Auditorium, former home of The Grand Ole Opry.

Topping it all though, he gets to hang out with his musical heroine, country singer Crystal Gayle.
