Oscar-winning actor Mahershala Ali is reportedly in line to take a lead role in a potential third season of True Detective.

After an extremely successful first season starring Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson, the second run of True Detective with Colin Farrell, Rachel McAdams and Vince Vaughn failed to garner as much acclaim, leaving the future of the show in question with HBO.

HBO programming president Casey Bloys recently said the series is high on his list of projects he would like to see return to TV, and according to The Hollywood Reporter, House of Cards and Moonlight star Mahershala Ali could be top of the list of acting talent for a third run.

Deadwood creator David Milch will be involved in the third season of the show, though it is not yet known if it will be in a collaborative role with True Detective writer and creator Nic Pizzolato or if he will serve as overall showrunner.

Pizzolato, who spent three and a half years writing the show's first season and produced the second season in just 14 months, has reportedly already written two episodes for the third run, which has yet to be officially greenlit.
