Coronation Street fans have been left bemused after watching Nick Tilsley narrowly escape death after the soap stalwart became trapped in quicksand.

The character was rescued from drowning at the last minute in Wednesday night's episode. However, it had been widely expected that these would be actor Ben Price's last scenes as Nick, as he revealed he would be leaving the soap this year.

The actor also previously said he was "surprised" at his exit storyline, leading viewers to conclude that the unorthodox quicksand plot would be his last one after seven years on the show.

Viewers saw Nick fighting for his life after becoming stuck in quicksand with the tide rising around him. Luckily, he was discovered by Peter Barlow and Steve McDonald, who managed to get emergency services to intervene in the nick of time.

Corrie fans took to Twitter to voice their opinions on the drama unfolding, with some saying they were feeling "a tad disappointed".

However, some viewers were glad that Nick was saved.

Wednesday night's show came amid a week of major plot twists in Weatherfield, including the return of Denise Osbourne (Denise Black) and the revelation that her son Daniel (Rob Mallard) tried to kill Ken Barlow.

The drama continues on Coronation Street continues on Thursday, and it looks like there's tension between Nick Tilsley and fiancée Leanne Battersby after his near-death experience.
