There's a serious documentary on Channel 4 about ISIS, while the film of the day sees Robert Downey Jr and Robert Duvall lock acting horns in The Judge.

Pick of the day

ISIS: The Origins of Violence, 9.00pm, Channel 4

In this authored historical investigation, historian Tom Holland traces the origins of Isis's extreme violence, which it claims is justified by the tenets and scriptures of Islam.

Travelling from Paris to Istanbul, Sinjar and Cairo, he examines the roots of Isis's hardcore interpretations, and asks whether the group's ideology is in part a reaction to a westernisation of Islam that dates back to Napoleon.

Holland questions the assertion - repeated by western leaders - that Isis has nothing to do with Islam. He examines the origins of the group's beliefs, which he traces back to the very origins of the faith.

Movie Choice of the day

The Judge, 9.35pm, RTÉ One

Don't expect to see the Hollywood wheel reinvented here, but if you want to put your feet up, enjoy a good yarn and some Oscar-bait acting, this will send you off to dreamland in a good mood.

It's basically an acting sparring class between two Roberts, Downey Jr and Duvall, with the former playing Hank Palmer a successful defence attorney in Chicago, who is estranged from his family. Duvall plays his father Joseph, a judge in a small town in Indiana.

Things get interesting when Hank's mother dies, but while back home dad Joseph gets questioned about a fatal hit and run incident and ends up on a murder rap. Even worse for him, Billy Bob Thornton plays his prosecutor Dwight Dickham.

Best On Demand/TV Catchup

Brasseye, All4

It might be twenty years old, but Brasseye was so far ahead of its time, the rest of the TV world only recently caught up with it.

Created by Chris Morris, it parodies the current affairs news programming of the period and it stands up hilariously well. It's also quite scary in the dumbing-down sense of how news is presented and consumed. Are people really that stupid?

A series of six episodes aired on Channel 4 in 1997, with a further special broadcast in 2001. The series was written by an impressive list of folk including Morris, David Quantick, Arthur Mathews, Graham Linehan and Charlie Brooker.

Today's Guilty Pleasure

Your Face or Mine, 8.00pm, Comedy Central

Jimmy Carr returns as the host as Comedy Central brings back early Noughties' game show, which originally ran on E4 between 2002 and 2003.

Executives hope its premise - that couples are forced to compare their looks with other people’s and each other - will resonate in a time of Twitter and collective narcissism.

Jimmy Carr says: "In an age when people are forever judging individuals on how they look, placing attractiveness on a pedestal above intelligence, and forcing others to fit societal norms of beauty, why not make them do all of those things, to their loved ones, on national television and for money?"
