The life of late broadcaster and Limerick man Terry Wogan will be celebrated at a special service at Westminster Abbey in London on September 27, the 50th anniversary of his first radio broadcast for the BBC.

Wogan, who died on January 31 at the age of 77 after a battle with cancer, began his UK career on the Light Programme, now BBC Radio 2.

He was last heard on the BBC on November 8, presenting his Weekend Wogan show, which he had hosted since 2010 following his decision to step down from his hugely-successful weekday show. He was also forced around the same time to pull out of presenting the annual Children in Need show at the last minute due to health issues.

Wogan began his broadcasting career in RTÉ, where he worked as a newsreader and announcer after answering an advertisement. He moved on to become a DJ and hosted quiz and variety shows.

After moving to the BBC his career flourished as he became one of the organisation's biggest and warmest personalities. His BBC Radio 2 breakfast show, with his recognisable voice and his wry, rambling thoughts on life, became the most listened to radio show in Europe.
