Alejandro G Inarritu has become the front-runner to win Best Director at the Oscars after winning the Directors Guild of America award (DGA) for his epic adventure The Revenant.
All but seven of the past DGA winners have gone on to bag the Academy Award for Best Director.
It is the first time a director has won the DGA award two years in a row, after the Mexican filmmaker took home the gong last year for Birdman.
Meanwhile, Alex Garland won the First-Time Feature Film Director award for his Domnhall Gleeson-starring drama Ex Machina and David Nutter won the dramatic series gong for the Game of Thrones' Mother's Mercy episode.
