The title The Force Awakens caused a few frowns when it was confirmed but it has since emerged that the original title of the new Star Wars movie was to be "Shadow of The Empire", a title taken from a 1996 Star Wars Expanded Universe novel.
Pablo Hidalgo, creative executive at Lucasfilm Story Group, has revealed on Twitter that "for the longest time," The Force Awakens was known as Shadow of the Empire after the novel by Steven Perry, which is set between Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi.
@VegaArts_ @justinlasalata it was Shadow (singular) of the Empire for a while.

Hidalgo added that "with so many books, it's inevitable" that some pieces of the universe would share a name. However, he said that might have lead to confusion and producers opted for the The Force Awakens as the title of the new movie.
Since it's released on December 17, Star Wars: The Force Awakens has became the fastest film ever to reach the $1 billion mark at the global box office.
