Irish Poldark heartthrob Aidan Turner has told fans they should prepare to experience him as a "totally shady" character in BBC One's Christmas adaptation of Agatha Christie's classic tale And Then There Were None.

The three-part whodunit is set in Devon in 1939 as a group of strangers who have been invited to a house realise there may be a killer among them.

In contrast to the nobility Turner exudes in the Poldark, his latest role sees him play Irish mercenary Philip Lombard, a character who he says has a "complete disregard for humanity".

"He enters the house and is the only one carrying a pistol and as the writer Sarah Phelps said, there's nothing more frightening than an Irish guy in 1939 with a gun!" said Turner in a BBC interview.

"There's nothing he wouldn't do. I wouldn't put anything past him. He's a nasty kind of guy and you get the impression he's done some horrible things in his life and he's not really regretful of any of them."

In the adaptation, the Dublin actor is part of an all-star cast that includes Charles Dance, Sam Neill, Miranda Richardson, Toby Stephens and Noah Taylor.

"I was on set with all these amazing actors who I have revered and looked up to for years," he said. "It was exciting; these are people I really wanted to work."
