The Foo Fighters had a surprise for the members of the controversial Westboro Baptist Church who were protesting outside the venue for the band's show in Kansas City, Missouri.

On Friday, the group arrived on the back of a pick-up truck to 'rickroll' protesters with Rick Astley's 1987 hit Never Gonna Give You Up playing from the speakers.

The band had signs reading, "You got Rick roll'd (again)" and "Keep it clean".

Westboro Baptist Church has been condemned around the world for its views on homosexuality and its protests outside military funerals.

Addressing fans at the concert later that night as he introduced the track My Hero, Grohl said: "You can't just sit there and do nothing; you got to go out and say what you want to say. So we did."

He added: "So I'm going to dedicate this song to all the people who go out and speak their mind, to stand up for what they think is right, because every time we got to stand up in this city in front of them, we do it because we feel like we're standing up for what we think is right."

In 2011, Foo Fighters also played for members of Westboro Baptist Church outside the group's Kansas show, performing the track Keep it Clean (Hot Buns)
