Tom Hardy has said he was "really bummed out" to have to drop out of the upcoming DC Comics film Suicide Squad.

The 37-year-old star was cast to play Rick Flagg in the ensemble action film but had to pull out due to filming commitments with the Alejandro Gonzalez-directed film The Revenant.

He has since been replaced in the role by Run All Night star Joel Kinnaman and Hardy told Collider that he wishes he could've starred in the project, "Warner Bros. is my home studio and I love them so I was really bummed out.

"I wanted to work on [Suicide Squad] and I know the script is really f***ing alley... But there's a very practical element as to why I've missed out on that foray, which is because Alejandro has overshot by three months in Calgary, so we've got to go back out to Patagonia or Alaska to continue shooting The Revenant which has turned into a much bigger beast than we thought, but that also looks exceptional."

Suicide Squad has an all-star cast which includes Will Smith, Cara Delevingne and Scott Eastwood. It will also see Jared Leto playing The Joker and Margot Robbie take on the role of Harley Quinn.

Hardy added that audiences should be excited about these two characters in particular, "I know what's gonna happen with The Joker and Harley Quinn in that; I won't give away too much ... its f***ing alley. I mean, everybody loves The Joker. Will Smith is a dope guy, but everybody loves The Joker and that's going to be, I think, a very important film for fans."

Suicide Squad is slated for release in August 2016.
