Ricky Gervais' upcoming comedy Special Correspondents is set to premiere on Netflix worldwide.

The movie, written by Gervais, is a satire of the social media era of news told through the eyes of a war reporter and it will premiere globally on the site in 2016.

Eric Bana plays a radio journalist who starts filing fake reports from a South American war from his Manhattan apartment.

Gervais, who has a supporting role in the film, said of the choice to release the film via Netflix, "Having shaken up the TV industry, Netflix is about to do the same to Hollywood. It's great to be part of the changing future.

"Ted Sarandos is the new Godfather of entertainment and he made me an offer I couldn't refuse."

Sarandon, the chief content officer of Netflix, added, "Special Correspondents is classic Ricky Gervais; smart social satire with heart. It's the kind of great grown-up comedy that studios rarely make anymore, one that's perfect for Netflix members around the world."
