With Far from the Madding Crowd in cinemas from May 1, star Carey Mulligan has been talking about her character, Bathsheba, in the new adaptation of the Thomas Hardy classic – watch the featurette here.

Directed by Thomas Vinterberg (The Hunt, Festen), Far from the Madding Crowd also stars Matthias Schoenaerts, Michael Sheen and Tom Sturridge.

Studio Fox Searchlight says: "Far from the Madding Crowd is the story of independent, beautiful and headstrong Bathsheba Everdene, who attracts three very different suitors: Gabriel Oak (Matthias Schoenaerts), a sheep farmer, captivated by her fetching wilfulness; Frank Troy (Tom Sturridge), a handsome and reckless Sergeant; and William Boldwood (Michael Sheen), a prosperous and mature bachelor.

"This timeless story of Bathsheba's choices and passions explores the nature of relationships and love – as well as the human ability to overcome hardships through resilience and perseverance."

Far from the Madding Crowd was also brought to the screen in a 1967 film, directed by John Schlesinger and starring Julie Christie, Terence Stamp, Peter Finch and Alan Bates.
