Jamie Dornan has spoken out in defence of The Fall's second season.

The Belfast actor stars as serial killer Paul Spector in the BBC Two/RTÉ One drama, which was criticised for expanding its format beyond the search for Spector in season two.

Dornan told The Guardian: "The thing is, the show had to develop and expand. You can't just regurgitate what you did in the first series.

"Some people's argument is that you should stop after the first series."

The Fifty Shades of Grey star is confirmed to be returning for a third season of The Fall alongside Gillian Anderson, something he is very happy about.

He said: "I would happily play Paul forever and one thing I'm learning is: 'Ah, **** it, you can't please everyone'."
