It is reported that Fifty Shades of Grey author EL James wants to write the screenplay for the book and film's sequel, Fifty Shades Darker.

Variety reports that having produced the first film and exercised a high level of creative control, James has been talking with Universal Pictures about making her debut as a screenwriter on the follow-up.

The trade daily says the sequel has yet to receive the green light because of the ongoing talks.

However, a Universal spokesperson said: "The studio had always intended to sit down with the author after the film opened and discuss next steps, and that has not yet happened."

Variety says that production on Fifty Shades Darker would probably not begin until the first quarter of 2016.
