Carrie Fisher will be honoured by the US-Ireland Alliance with an Oscar Wilde Award for her contribution to film and television.

The actress will receive the award at the upcoming ceremony on February 19 in Santa Monica, California, which will be hosted by her Star Wars: The Force Awakens director JJ Abrams.

Talk show host Stephen Colbert and painter Colin Davidson have also been chosen by the US-Ireland Alliance to be honoured at the ceremony.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Fisher said: "My great, great, fabulous grandfather Burt McReynolds from the county Donegal was wrongfully accused of being a horse thief, a case of mistaken identity."

She continued: "But rather than put his family through the rigours of a trial to clear the family name, he emigrated to America, dropped the 'Mc' in the ocean, became Burt Reynolds and the rest is history… and incredibly boring.

"Thankfully, my mother changed all that and gave our family name a kick in the pants that it might or might not deserve."

Irish singer-songwriters Gavin James and Megan O'Neill will perform at the event.
