Glassland and Pilgrim Hill director Gerard Barrett is to direct Dakota Fanning in an adaptation of Susannah Cahalan's bestselling memoir Brain on Fire: My Month of Madness, which will be co-produced by Charlize Theron's production company Denver & Delilah Films.

Deadline.com, which broke the story, says that Barrett will also adapt Cahalan's story of psychiatric illness for the screen and serve as co-producer.

The Canadian-Irish co-production will begin shooting in May in Vancouver and New York.

Barrett's Glassland is screening at the current Sundance Film Festival in Utah in the World Cinema Dramatic Competition category.

It opens in Ireland on Friday April 17.
