Eddie Redmayne has said he barely slept while filming The Theory of Everything because he was afraid Stephen Hawking would not like his portrayal of him.

The 32-year-old star revealed to Time Out magazine that he was scared about taking on the role of the renowned physicist. He said: "Terrified. I'd met Stephen and he was never going to say, 'I'm thrilled you're doing this, you're going to be amazing.'

"It was nine months of sleepless nights, thinking, 'Will he like it?'"

After watching the film however, Hawking told director James Marsh that he thought he was watching himself in some scenes of the film. Redmayne said of hearing that feedback: "That was the greatest review ever. I want to retire."

The Theory of Everything hits cinemas on December 26.
