David Beckham has opened up on the moment he realised his wife Victoria Beckham truly understood him.
The former footballer recalled the emotional moment he realised that he would not be playing in his fourth World Cup.
He said in the DVD release of David Beckham Into the Unknown: "The second time around when I went to AC Milan again was purely because I wanted to play with the England team in the World Cup.
"I went into a game - my achilles had been hurting in the lead up to it. I remember the game had been pretty rough as it was. I got kicked in the face, I had a cut face.
"I remember stepping back and I felt like someone had kicked me from behind. I reached down - I felt my achilles. I felt my achilles had gone - there was a huge hole in it.
"My first thought was my goal had gone. The reason why I was doing what I was doing, the reason why I was being selfish like I was being.
"And the doctor came over to me and he gave me the phone. Victoria was on the phone and she said, 'What's just happened?' And I said to her, 'It's done'.
"And she said, 'What do you mean it's done?' And I remember, I'll never forget, she just burst out unconditionally with emotion and crying, when someone just kind of can't get their breath. She literally handed the phone to one of the boys and the boys were upset.
"That was one of the points when I knew I had a wife that really understood me and really understood why I was doing it. She knew how much it meant to me, she knew how much playing in a fourth World Cup meant to me. That was a tough time for me."
