The second instalment of the original Star Wars trilogy, The Empire Strikes Back, has beaten Citizen Kane and The Godfather to be voted the greatest film of all time in a new poll.
Readers of Empire magazine voted the space opera Number One from a series of 301 titles suggested. Francis Ford Coppola's mafia masterpiece The Godfather came in second place, followed by Batman thriller The Dark Knight, while The Shawshank Redemption and Pulp Fiction completed the top five.
Star Wars creator George Lucas said it was a "privilege" to see his 1980 film, which was directed by Irvin Kershner, come out on top. He told Empire: "It's soulful, but in a different way from Episode IV. It's a little bit more adult. I'm more of a goofy director."
