Zac Efron has been cast in the big-screen adaptation of John Grisham's novel The Associate.

The That Awkward Moment star will also serve as a producer on the legal thriller, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

Efron replaces Shia LeBeouf who was previously attached to the lead role in the Paramount movie in 2008.

He will play a Yale Law School graduate who finds himself the victim of blackmail and is forced to work at the world's largest law firm. He has to spy on a dispute between two powerful defence contractors worth billions.

Red Wagon Entertainment's Doug Wick and Lucy Fisher will produce alongside Efron's company Ninjas Runnin' Wild.

They are currently looking for a writer to pen the screenplay.

Previous adaptation of Grisham's books include The Firm, The Pelican Brief, The Client, A Time to Kill and The Rainmaker.

Efron can next by seen opposite Seth Rogan in The Neighbours, which is due to be released this May.
