Emma Thompson is set to be honoured at the Santa Barbara International Film Festival.

The actress will receive the festival's 'Modern Master Award' on February 8, 2013, at the city's Arlington Theatre.

Thompson follows in the footsteps of the likes of Ben Affleck, Sean Penn, Clint Eastwood and Christopher Nolan, who have all previously won the award.

It is given to individuals who have multi-faceted careers, and Thompson has been famed for both her acting and writing work.

Thompson won a Best Actress Academy Award for Howard's End in 1992 and in 1995 won a Best Writing Academy Award for adapting Sense and Sensibility.

The Butler stars Forest Whitaker and Oprah Winfrey will also be honoured at the Santa Barbara International Film Festival, which runs from January 30 to February 9, 2014.
