Revenge star Emily VanCamp has revealed that the soapy US drama will cut down on its romantic plots in its upcoming third season.

The former Brothers & Sisters actress told TVLine that her character Emily's "muddled" love life will be simplified in the new season, the first under new showrunner Sunil Nayar.

Things got more than a little complicated as three men - Daniel, Jack and Aiden - all featured, at one time or other, heavily in her life.

“One thing that Sunil and I talked about was really defining her relationship with these men, because it got very muddled,” said VanCamp.

“No one is going to love three men in the same way. We really needed to define, 'Who does Emily Thorne love?’”

VanCamp added that the relationship between Emily and Daniel (Josh Bowman) will no longer be a major focus. "She's really using Daniel," she said. "It's unfortunate. There really is not the element of love between Emily and Daniel. It's part of her plan.

"Jack (Nick Wechsler) and Aiden (Barry Sloane) are her two great loves, for very different reasons."

ABC president Paul Lee recently conceded that Revenge had "stumbled a little" in its second season, promising a "less complicated" third run.

Revenge season three begins Stateside on ABC at the end of September and will follow on RTÉ Two.
