Simon Cowell has given a thumbs-up to X Factor winners, Little Mix.

The show’s boss and owner of Syco wrote on his Twitter page that the first ever group to win the ITV talent show “could be stars.” Cowell added that he hoped a group would win this year and that their mentor, Tulisa Contostavlos, had “done a great job.” In fact prior to the show, which he watched live from the US, he proposed that “Tulisa should be a permanent fifth member (of Little Mix)!"

He also had a message for his X Factor USA co-star Paula Abdul, who had the Groups category on the Fox series: "Congratulations to Little Mix. And Paula as you can see, groups can win this show!"

The quartet of Jesy Nelson, Perrie Edwards, Leigh-Anne Pinnock and Jade Thirlwall were ecstatic when they were announced as the winners, pipping other finalist, Marcus Collins to the top spot. Even as host Dermot O’Leary handed them a freshly pressed CD of their debut single, and the song that notched them glory, Damien Rice’s Cannonball, they were crying tears of delight.

With Tulisa standing in the middle, all four (and Contostavlos) looked extremely nervous before the result was announced and then there were almost lost for words - apart from ‘gosh’ and 'wow’.

"This is never going to sink in," said Jesy. "We can never thank the public enough for voting for us." Tulisa, who burst into tears when the news was announced, added later: "I think I wanted them to win more than they did."

Maybe she will become that fifth member.
