X-Man James McAvoy is joining Jamie Bell and Brendan Gleeson in an adaptation of the Irvine Welsh novel Filth.

McAvoy will be taking on the lead role of Bruce Robertson.

The film is being directed by Jon S Baird from his own script.

Welsh is best known as the author of Trainspotting and is on board as a producer after approving Baird’s script.

Filth tells the story of Bruce Robertson, a Scottish police officer.

Robertson is a sex-obsessed, cocaine addicted, hate-fuelled misanthrope who constantly abuses those around him, physically and emotionally.

As a police officer he is investigating a murder but avoids his duties as much as he can in order to pursue his own deplorable ends.

Filth is due out next year and also stars Alan Cumming, Toby Jones and Imogen Poots.
