Joe McElderry has signed a new album deal with Universal.

The winner of last weekend’s Popstar to Operastar has had a rollercoaster career so far. Following his X Factor win he was subsequently dumped by Simon Cowell’s Syco label despite notching a number one single.

According to reports McElderry will release an album of "classic songs" on August 22, which will include covers of Somewhere Over The Rainbow, Nessun Dorma and I Dreamed A Dream.

The 20-year-old’s debut album, Wide Awake, only reached new three in the UK charts last November.

"My new album is a snapshot of where I am today and I am excited about the opportunity to record and perform some of this amazing repertoire," McElderry explained.
