Gordon Ramsay has dismissed speculation about hair treatments and recent plastic surgery, saying that his puffed up face and "hair nightmare" was due to being doused with petrol and an allergic reaction to horses.

People magazine reports that in a conference call with reporters, Ramsay said he had been doused with petrol while making a documentary on illegal shark fin hunting by bandits in Costa Rica.

"I had petrol doused, gasoline poured all over my hair and I had a horrific infection," he said. "It certainly didn't cause my hair to be falling out."

He continued: "I was in Napa [in California] for Christmas literally two weeks after the shoot and went horseback riding with the kids and had a horrendous allergic reaction to the horses, combined with the problems I had with my scalp, so it was just a hair nightmare."

"I can now say that I am almost 60-70 percent recovered," he added.
