Following Joe's death in the New Year, David throws his phone into a canal after realising it has texts that could make it look like Gail killed her hubby.
Gail (Helen Worth) is the prime suspect when his body is found with her nail scratches on his face. She also took out a life insurance policy on him two weeks before his death.
The widow is later found to have sent Joe's daughter Tina (Michelle Keegan) reassuring texts from his phone, believing the plan had worked.
Fearing that she will go to prison, David (Jack P Shepherd) throws the mobile into the water in a bid to stop his mum going to jail.
