French author Jean-Marie Gustave Le Clézio has won the 2008 Nobel Prize for Literature.

In a statement, the Swedish Academy said that Le Clézio was an "author of new departures, poetic adventure and sensual ecstasy, explorer of a humanity beyond and below the reigning civilisation".

Le Clézio receives 10m Swedish kronor (€1.033m) as the winner.

Among Le Clézio's works are: 'Désert', 'Cœur Brûle et Autres Romances (Burnt Heart and Other Romances)' and 'Ourania'.
