Bono is to be honoured with the prestigious Liberty Medal in Philadelphia later this year.
The U2 frontman is to receive the award in recognition of his humanitarian work.
Previous recipients include Nelson Mandela, Jimmy Carter, Bill Clinton and George HW Bush.
The $100,000 prize money will be given to the DATA (Debt, AIDS, Trade in Africa) organisation.
The award will be presented on 27 September at the National Constitution Centre in Philadelphia.
