Boyne wins Bisto Book of the Year

The author of 'The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas', John Boyne, has won the Bisto Book of the Year for best children's book.

Boyne, who earlier this year won The Tubridy Show Listeners' Choice Award at the Irish Book Awards, was presented with a trophy and a cheque for €10,000 by Senator David Norris and Chairperson of the Judging Panel, Mary Shine Thompson.

Siobhan Dowd won the Eilís Dillon Award for her book 'A Swift Pure Cry' and received €3,000 and a specially commissioned sculpture. 

Oliver Jeffers ('The Incredible Book Eating Boy'), Éilís Ní Dhuibhne ('Hurlamaboc') and Siobhán Parkinson ('Something Invisible') each received Honour Awards of €2,000 and a framed certificate.

'The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas' tells the story of the friendship that develops between a German boy whose father works at Auschwitz and another boy who is imprisoned in the concentration camp. It is currently being made into a film.
