'Coronation Street' star Johnny Briggs, who plays Mike Baldwin in the soap, is backing a fundraising campaign for the Alzheimer's Society.

The 70-year-old actor recently filmed his last scenes for the show, with fans of the soap seeing his character Mike develop Alzheimer's disease and quickly deteriorate both mentally and physically.

Briggs is now helping with a fundraising appeal to help those who are affected by the disease.

He said: "I was lucky when the director said 'cut' I could walk away from Alzheimer's disease. Thousands can't."

"To see someone like Mike affected by Alzheimer's does bring it home that it is not just older people who develop this dreadful illness and it isn't just the person with dementia who is affected, it's everyone around them too," he said.
