JK Rowling's sixth Harry Potter book, 'Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince', was named Book of the Year at the British Book Awards in London last night.

Rowling topped the public vote ahead of autobiographies by the late John Peel, Sharon Osbourne, Jeremy Clarkson and Piers Morgan, and a Jamie Oliver cookbook.

Rowling's sales to date have topped 300 million worldwide and she is currently writing the final book in the Potter series.

"I am enjoying writing the last book in the series and it's coming along nicely," she said.

Sharon Osbourne's 'Extreme' won the autobiography category and Alan Bennett was named author of the year.

'Labyrinth' by Kate Mosse won the Richard and Judy Best Read category while Marina Lewycka took Newcomer of the Year for 'A Short History of Tractors in Ukranian'.

The 2006 Award for Outstanding Achievement went to chef Jamie Oliver.
