'Little Britain' has scooped the award for Best TV Comedy of 2005 at the 16th annual British Comedy Awards, beating Ricky Gervais' show 'Extras'.

It is the second year that David Walliams and Matt Lucas' hit sketch show won the comedy award.

The pair also picked up the first Ronnie Barker Writer of the Year award for their efforts on 'Little Britain'.

Ashley Jensen, who stars as Maggie in 'Extras' picked up the awards for Best Television Comedy Actress and Best Comedy Newcomer.

After picking up the Best Comedy Newcomer award, Jensen said: "I'm a wee bit speechless and anyone who knows me knows that's an accomplishment."

The award for Best Television Comedy Actor went to Chris Langham, who stars in 'Help' and 'The Thick of It'.

Paul O'Grady picked up the award for Best Comedy Entertainment Personality, beating Ant and Dec and Jonathan Ross.

The award for Best Comedy Entertainment Programme went to 'The X Factor', which was nominated in the same category as 'Friday Night with Jonathan Ross' and 'Ant and Dec's Saturday Night Takeaway'.

'Shameless' was named as Best TV Comedy Drama and 'The Simpsons' picked up the award for Best International Comedy TV Show.
