Inspector Morse series set for remake

A remake of the popular television series 'Inspector Morse' is being planned, two years after the death of its star John Thaw.

ITV is planning a new two-part series of the detective show, centring on Morse's sidekick Sergeant Lewis, played by Kevin Whately.

Thaw's widow Sheila Hancock and writer of the Morse books, Colin Dexter, have both given their blessing to the upcoming project.

Head of ITV drama Nick Elliot said; "Time has now passed (since Thaw's death) and it's appropriate and everyone's very happy about doing it."

All of the Inspector Morse books have already been filmed but it has not yet been confirmed whether Colin Dexter will write new material for the proposed two-part series.

The original series of 'Inspector Morse' was launched in 1987, with Thaw's final appearance in November of 2000.

Thaw died from cancer two-and-a-half years ago, at the age of 60.
