2004 IMPAC shortlist now announced

The nominees for the 9th annual International IMPAC Dublin Literary Award 2004 have been announced by the Lord Mayor of Dublin, Royston Brady.

The 10 shortlisted titles for the world's largest literary prize were selected from a long list of 125, nominated by 162 libraries from 47 countries.

Among the shortlisted titles are: 'The Book of Illusions' by Paul Auster; 'Any Human Heart' by William Boyd; 'Caramelo' by Sandra Cisneros; 'Middlesex' by Jeffrey Eugenides; 'The White Family' by Maggie Gee and 'Family Matters' by Rohinton Mistry.

Four of the nominated books are translations: 'This Blinding Absence of Light' by Tahar Ben Jelloun, translated from the French by Linda Coverdale; 'Balthasar's Odyssey' by Amin Maalouf, translated from the French by Barbara Bray; 'Earth and Ashes' by Atiq Rahimi, translated from the Dari by Erdag M Göknar and 'House of Day, House of Night' by Olga Tokarczuk, translated from the Polish by Antonia Lloyd-Jones.

The winner of the €100,000 prize will be announced on 17 June in City Hall, Dublin.
