Steven Spielberg has purchased at auction the Oscar won by Bette Davis for her performance in the 1935 film 'Dangerous'.
It is reported that he will return the statuette to the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences.
A spokesperson for the Academy said she did not know how much Spielberg had paid for the Oscar.
However, Variety has reported that the director paid $207,500.
This is the third time Spielberg has bought an Oscar in order to return it to the Academy: he paid $578,000 to buy Davis' Oscar for the film 'Jezebel' and in 1996 paid $607,500 at auction for Clark Gable's award for 'It Happened One Night'.
