Bono has been named the MusiCares 2003 Person of the Year by the National Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences in the US.

The U2 frontman is being honoured for his work in the music industry and on behalf of African and worldwide charities.

Bono will officially receive the title from last year's winner Billy Joel at a ceremony in New York on 21 February.

Last week, the 42-year-old Dubliner was named Most Powerful Person in Music as voted for by readers of Q Magazine.

The MusiCares initiative was started by the Recording Academy in 1989.
