Thousands of wannabes have gathered in London at the first open audition for the new British TV talent show 'Popstars: The Rivals'.

Hopefuls will be aiming to impress judges Louis Walsh, Geri Halliwell and Pete Waterman in a bid to become the next chart sensation.

Auditions for the show were initially supposed to be by invitation only but a high-profile launch last week led to hundreds of calls from people who had missed the final deadline.

Two groups - a girl band and a boy band - will be formed through the show.

The two are expected to go head to head in a race for the Christmas Number 1.
