Paris Opera cancels Nutcracker over strike

The Paris Opera has been forced to cancel performances of Tchaikovsky's 'The Nutcracker' and Strauss' 'Die Fledermaus' this week owing to a strike by technical and administrative staff. The Nutcracker had been due to be staged today, 'Die Fledermause', which was scheduled to open on Thursday was also cancelled because singers were unable to rehearse.

Backstage workers are striking in demand for higher wages has been threatening the Christmas season for several weeks and has caused disruptions to the programme at the central Bastille Opera. The industrial action also casts doubts over the opening night of Balanchine's Joyeaux at the Palais Garnier.
