Back of the net! Alan Partridge makes yet another comeback

Alan Corr appeared on Arena on RTÉ Radio 1 to capture the essence of Alan and parse the Partridge.

Alan Partridge returns to BBC television this Friday with his first show in four years. In How are You? I'm Alan (Partridge), the veteran broadcaster investigates issues surrounding mental health.

Alan is the self-important, screamingly incompetent and pompous spoof broadcaster who has developed from small beginnings as, well, a bit of an eejit into one of the great tragicomic figures of the era.

For a character that made his first appearance way back in 1991 as an inane sports reporter on Chris Morris’ wicked parody of news media, On The Hour, and its TV version, The Day Today, Partridge is among the most enduring and most loved comedy creations of the past three decades.

Alan came from the minds of comedian and actor Steve Coogan and satirist Armando Iannucci and over the years we have laughed like a drain to his exploits on mock chat show Knowing Me Knowing You, sitcom of sorts I’m Alan Partridge, and spoof radio show Mid-Morning Matters.

There was also a biography, a very good film, Alan Partridge: Alpha Papa, and a stage show, which Coogan brought to Dublin in 2022.

As the man himself might say, Alan just keeps bouncing back.

How are You? I’m Alan (Partridge) is yet another return to Alan by Coogan but where did the spoof Norfolk broadcaster come from and how and why has he weathered the fashions and fads of comedy for well over thirty years?
