For a while, during my teenage years, I tried hard to be Bob Dylan - but my mother kept interfering. I knew that if only I was allowed to own a denim jacket like the one Dylan wore on the cover of Greatest Hits Vol 2, I could easily attain a Bob-like state of beatitude but my mother said no, denim jackets looked 'common' so I could just put that straight out of my head I wasn’t getting one and had I done my homework yet. I listened to Joan Baez sing heartbreakingly in Diamonds and Rust about how Dylan's eyes were bluer than robins’ eggs, how he was the original vagabond, the unwashed phenomenon and I wanted some girl, any girl, to sing about me with that same heartbreak in her voice. Sadly, my eyes were green, a difficult problem to rectify...
