Sound Out Recommends: Ian Wilson's Wild is the Wind

Sound Out presenter Ian McGlynn previews one of this week's new releases - Wild is the Wind from
Belfast-born composer Ian Wilson.

Belfast-born composer Ian Wilson has been an exciting creative force in contemporary Irish music for many years and his current album of works for wind instruments, Wild is the Wind, is now released on Diatribe Records.

A musical examination of 21st century world and concerns, it tackles themes such as empty political promises and ecological issues while channelling James Brown funk and deconstructing Nina Simone's titular song.

Wilson has written nearly one hundred works in multiple genres - operas, concertos, orchestral and chamber music and multi-media pieces. While his music has been performed at prestigious festivals such as the BBC Proms and Venice Biennale and in venues including Carnegie Hall and Vienna's Musikverein, recent work has seen him collaborate with jazz and trad musicians, choreographers, theatre directors, plus electroacoustic and computer music composers.

Wild is the Wind sees him working with many ensembles and musicians closer to home, including flautist Fiona Kelly, the Hard Rain Soloist Ensemble and Yurodny Ensemble.

In a 2014 Nova special for RTÉ lyric fm, Bernard Clarke marked Ian Wilson's 50th birthday with a programme reflecting the breadth of his music including works for symphony orchestra, jazz ensemble, string quartet, piano, sean nos, musical theatre, improvisation, opera and more.
