Who was Paddy Fahey? The Rolling Wave Podcast

Aoife Nic Cormaic introduces some of the best interviews and features from the popular Irish traditional music show on RTÉ Radio 1 - listen above.

When fiddle player and composer Paddy Fahey died on the 31st of May 2019 he was almost 103 years old.

To people outside of his local area in East Galway, Paddy Fahey was somewhat of an enigma. He was notoriously private - he never gave interviews or recorded commercially - yet in his lifetime he composed around 60 tunes that are beloved by musicians.

Fiddle players in particular are attracted to the ease with which the tunes move on the instrument. As Martin Hayes says, they always make your instrument sound better! Paddy Fahey's elegant and evocative music has been recorded by a host of great musicians, including Martin Hayes, the Kane Sisters, Claire and Breda Keville, Planxty, Kevin Burke and many more.

Watch: Liz and Yvonne Kane play with Paddy Fahey

Liz and Yvonne Kane have championed Paddy Fahey’s tunes for years. The Connemara-born sisters recorded a number of them on their fiddle duet albums. In 2006, they took part in an RTÉ Radio 1 series about women musicians in Irish Traditional Music called Cherish the Ladies.
