Unorthodox: The true story behind Netflix's hit series

Last month, a new four-part drama called Unorthodox launched on Netflix.

Based on the eponymous memoir by Deborah Feldman, it tells the story of a Hasidic Jewish woman who escapes the prospect of an arranged marriage within her New York community and makes her way to Berlin in search of freedom.

Feldman, who was 17 at the time of the arranged marriage to a man she had only met on two brief occasions, has been recounting her own experiences on The Ryan Tubridy Show on RTÉ Radio 1.

She details the three-year process in which she planned her escape and the key moments that led her to make her decision.

"For me personally it was actually this knowledge that I was going to become a mother," she explains.

"That I was going to be bringing an innocent child into this world and forcing this child to grow up the way I had grown up."
