Listen to Eiléan Ní Chuilleanáin's The Polio Epidemic, read by Poetry Programme host Olivia O'Leary, and set to a series of haunting images of a deserted Dublin, shot in recent days by photographer Kieran Slyne.

"Many of us have wondered how children will remember this strange time, keeping away from one other to try to stay safe from Covid 19. And for older people like me, the nearest example we had of it was the polio epidemic in the mid 50's. Cork was hit particularly badly. Poet Eiléan Ní Chuilleanéin has written this memory of it." - Olivia O'Leary

The Poetry Programme is on Sunday nights at 7.30pm on RTÉ Radio 1 - listen back here.
